Hair Fall Treatment in Karachi: Causes, Tests and What Works

Hair fall has more than one cause, and each cause needs a different plan. This guide explains how to tell shedding from pattern hair loss, which tests help, what the research says about treatment and when to see a doctor.

Quick answer

Hair fall in Karachi usually comes from one of two patterns. Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) thins hair slowly at the temples, crown or parting and runs in families. Temporary shedding (telogen effluvium) follows illness, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or low iron or thyroid levels, and usually settles within about 6 months once the trigger is treated. A doctor tells them apart with your history, a scalp exam and a few blood tests.

The basics

How much hair fall is normal?

Losing some hair every day is normal. Each hair grows, rests and sheds in a repeating cycle, so a few dozen strands on your pillow, brush or shower floor is expected. StatPearls notes that collecting more than about 100 hairs in 24 hours points to excess shedding, and that a gentle pull test removing four or more hairs per pull is another sign.

Counting hairs is hard, so look for change instead: a thinner ponytail, a wider parting, a higher hairline or more scalp showing than last year. A change that lasts longer than a few weeks deserves a review, because early treatment gives the best chance of keeping the hair you have.

Causes can overlap. For example, pattern hair loss can exist together with iron deficiency, which is why a proper assessment matters before choosing a treatment.

Telling them apart

How can I tell pattern hair loss from temporary shedding?

Pattern loss is concentrated and gradual, while shedding is spread out and recent. In men, pattern loss usually starts at the temples and crown. In women, it more often shows as a wider parting and overall thinning without a bald patch. Temporary shedding shows up as more hair on the pillow and in the drain, often from all over the scalp, about 3 months after a clear trigger.

Pattern hair loss is very common. StatPearls reports that about 50 percent of men are affected by age 50 and about 80 percent by age 70, and that incidence in women rises after menopause. Telogen effluvium is described as self limiting, and the outlook for full recovery is generally favourable once the cause is addressed.

Finding the cause

Which tests help find the cause of hair fall?

A doctor decides which tests you need after hearing your history and examining your scalp. Tests commonly considered include ferritin and a full blood count for iron status and thyroid function, and a doctor may add other checks depending on your symptoms. StatPearls lists iron deficiency, hypothyroidism, crash dieting, recent illness and certain medicines among the recognised triggers of shedding.

  1. Share your history

Tell the doctor when shedding began, whether you had illness, surgery, childbirth, weight loss or a new medicine in the previous 6 months, and whether hair loss runs in your family.

  2. Scalp examination

The doctor checks the pattern of thinning, hair thickness, scalp health and any patches. A gentle pull test may be done.

  3. Blood tests when needed

Ferritin, blood count and thyroid function are common starting points. Results show whether a deficiency or a thyroid problem is part of the picture.

  4. Diagnosis and plan

You receive a clear diagnosis, a treatment plan and a time to review progress, usually 4 to 6 months later.

Treatments

What hair fall treatments actually work?

Fix the trigger

For temporary shedding, treatment centres on the cause: correcting iron or thyroid problems, reviewing medicines, improving nutrition and allowing time. StatPearls describes it as self limiting, with hair growth restarting once the cause is addressed.

Minoxidil

A topical treatment available in strengths up to 5 percent. StatPearls notes that higher concentrations work better, that it needs at least 4 to 6 months of consistent use and that it must be continued to keep results.

Finasteride for men

A once daily 1 mg tablet that blocks 5 alpha reductase type 2. It works better at the crown than at the front, can cause side effects such as sexual dysfunction in some men, and is not for women of childbearing age. It is a prescription medicine, so a doctor must guide it.

Combination treatment

StatPearls notes that using finasteride and minoxidil together often gives better results than either alone, which is why doctors often combine treatments.

PRP for hair

Platelet rich plasma uses platelets from your own blood, injected into the scalp. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found an average gain of about 28 hairs per square centimetre over placebo, though the evidence is low certainty and the studies varied widely. Hair transplant

For established loss with enough donor hair, a transplant moves healthy follicles to thinning areas. Our FUE hair transplant guide explains the technique and recovery.

Give any treatment at least 4 to 6 months. Hair grows slowly, so changes before that point are hard to judge. Take photos of your hairline, crown and parting in the same light every month and compare them at the review.
Your next steps

What should I do in Karachi if my hair is falling?

  1. Take baseline photos

Photograph your hairline, crown and parting in daylight today. Photos are the best way to see change over time.

  2. Write down possible triggers

Note any illness, surgery, childbirth, weight loss, new medicine or stressful event in the last 6 months.

  3. Take the HairScore quiz

The free HairScore quiz gives a basic result straight away and a full report when you add your WhatsApp number.

  4. Book a scalp assessment

A dermatologist confirms the cause, orders tests if needed and builds your plan. If you cannot visit, send clear photos on WhatsApp for a first opinion.

  5. Start treatment and review

Follow the plan consistently and review at 3 to 6 months with your photos.

Red flags

When should I see a doctor about hair fall?

See a doctor sooner when hair falls suddenly or in patches, or when other symptoms appear. Waiting is reasonable only when shedding follows a clear trigger, began recently and comes without other symptoms.

Reasonable to watch for a few weeks

  • Shedding started within the last 2 to 3 months after a clear trigger such as illness or childbirth
  • Hair looks evenly thinner and the scalp is comfortable
  • You have no other new symptoms

Book a review soon if

  • Hair falls out suddenly or in heavy amounts
  • You see round bald patches
  • Your scalp is itchy, painful, red or scaly
  • Shedding began after starting a new medicine
  • You have tiredness, weight change or other symptoms alongside hair loss
  • Shedding has continued for more than 6 months

Questions answered

Hair fall in Karachi: frequently asked questions

Is it normal to lose 100 hairs a day?

Some daily shedding is normal because every hair cycles through growth, rest and shedding. StatPearls notes that losing more than about 100 hairs in 24 hours points to excess shedding. Because counting is unreliable, a thinner ponytail, a wider parting or more visible scalp is a better sign that something has changed.

What is the main cause of hair fall in men and women?

Pattern hair loss, called androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of progressive hair loss. StatPearls reports that about 50 percent of men are affected by age 50 and about 80 percent by age 70, and that incidence in women rises after menopause. Temporary shedding after illness, childbirth, crash dieting or stress is the other common cause.

Does stress cause hair fall?

Yes, physical and emotional stress can trigger telogen effluvium, a diffuse shedding of resting hairs. Shedding usually appears about 3 months after the trigger, with a range of 1 to 6 months, so the cause is often forgotten by the time hair starts to fall.

How long does hair fall last after an illness or childbirth?

An acute episode of telogen effluvium usually lasts less than 6 months. Hair growth typically restarts once the trigger is addressed, and the outlook for full recovery is generally good. Shedding that continues beyond 6 months needs a doctor’s review for another cause.

Can hair fall be reversed?

It depends on the cause. Temporary shedding usually recovers by itself once the trigger is fixed. Pattern hair loss can be slowed, and sometimes improved, with treatment such as minoxidil, finasteride for men or PRP, but results need at least 4 to 6 months of consistent use and treatment is usually long term.

Which vitamin or mineral deficiency causes hair fall?

Iron deficiency and thyroid problems are the two most often linked with diffuse shedding. A blood test such as ferritin and thyroid function shows whether you need treatment. Taking supplements without a test may not help and can delay finding the real cause.

Do hair oils and shampoos stop hair fall?

Oils and shampoos can improve how the scalp feels and how hair looks, but they are not among the medical treatments that StatPearls lists as approved for pattern hair loss. If hair is thinning, a doctor can confirm the cause and suggest treatment with evidence behind it.

How long does hair fall treatment take to work?

Both minoxidil and finasteride need at least 4 to 6 months of consistent use before improvement becomes noticeable, and an early shedding phase can occur when starting. Judge any treatment after 4 to 6 months and take progress photos in the same light every month.

When is a hair transplant the right choice?

A transplant suits established pattern hair loss when enough healthy donor hair remains at the back and sides of the scalp. StatPearls describes more than 40 follicular units per square centimetre of donor hair as the usual requirement. A doctor checks your donor area before recommending surgery. How much does hair fall treatment cost in Karachi?

Cost depends on the cause and the plan. Medical treatment, PRP sessions and a hair transplant are priced very differently, so the price is confirmed after a consultation. You can send clear photos on WhatsApp for a first opinion and a written plan.
