PRP vs Hair Transplant in Karachi: Which One Do You Need?
PRP and a hair transplant solve different problems. This guide compares how each works, who each suits, what the research says, recovery and the cost factors, so you can decide with a doctor instead of guessing.
Quick answer
PRP and hair transplant do different jobs. PRP uses platelets from your own blood to support hair follicles that are still alive, so it suits early thinning. A hair transplant moves healthy donor follicles into areas that have lost hair, so it suits established loss when enough donor hair remains. Many people use medicines or PRP to protect the hair they have and a transplant to rebuild areas that are already bald.
PRP vs hair transplant: what is the difference?
| PRP for hair | Hair transplant (FUE) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Injects platelet rich plasma from your own blood into the scalp to support weakened follicles | Moves healthy follicles from the back and sides of the scalp to thinning or bald areas |
| Best stage | Early thinning with hair still present | Established hair loss with enough donor hair |
| Treatment pattern | A course of sessions, then maintenance if advised | One procedure, sometimes a second session for density |
| Downtime | Little, with mild scalp tenderness or redness possible | Several days of visible healing, with a longer period before final results |
| When you can judge results | Most trials assessed results at 3 to 6 months | New growth shows over several months, with full results around 12 months |
| Adds hair to bald areas | No | Yes, where donor hair allows |
| Evidence | Pooled trials show a gain over placebo, but certainty is low | Described by StatPearls as effective and cosmetically satisfactory in suitable patients |
| Main requirement | Follicles that are still alive | More than 40 follicular units per square centimetre of donor hair |
What is PRP for hair and does it work?
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma, a concentrate made from your own blood. A small blood sample is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich layer, which is then injected into the areas of the scalp where hair is thinning. The aim is to support weakened follicles and prolong their growth phase.
The research is encouraging but limited. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials, published in Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, found that PRP increased hair density by an average of about 28 hairs per square centimetre compared with placebo. The same authors reported low certainty evidence, highly varied preparation methods and follow up periods, small studies and signs of publication bias, and recommended further high quality trials.
What this means for you: PRP is a reasonable supportive option for early thinning, ideally alongside medical treatment. It is not a guaranteed cure and it does not grow hair where follicles have already been lost. Learn how we run it on the Hair PRP in Karachi page.
What is a hair transplant and who is it for?
A hair transplant relocates your own healthy hair follicles to areas that have thinned or gone bald. In follicular unit extraction (FUE), individual grafts are taken from the donor area at the back and sides of the scalp, where hair is usually resistant to pattern loss, and placed to match natural direction and density at the hairline and top.
StatPearls describes hair transplantation as effective and cosmetically satisfactory for selected patients, and says it needs an adequate volume of donor hair, typically more than 40 follicular units per square centimetre. Results build gradually. Transplanted hairs commonly shed early and then regrow, so new hair becomes visible over several months and most clinics describe full results around 12 months.

PRP or hair transplant: which one do you need?
Early thinning, hair still dense
Start with medical treatment and consider PRP to support existing follicles. A transplant is rarely the first step at this stage, and treating early protects the hair you have.
Receding hairline or thinning crown that has been stable
A transplant assessment makes sense when loss is established and the donor area is strong. Medicines or PRP can protect surrounding hair after surgery.
Mixed picture
Many people have thinning in some areas and bald patches in others. A combined plan, medicines or PRP for thinning zones and grafting for bald zones, is common.
Sudden or patchy shedding
Neither option comes first. Sudden heavy shedding or round bald patches need a medical review to find the cause. Read our guide to hair fall causes and treatment.
Can PRP replace a hair transplant?
No, because PRP cannot create follicles that are gone. PRP supports follicles that are still present but weakened. In areas that have been bald for years, the follicles are usually no longer producing hair, and injections cannot rebuild them. Grafting is the option that adds hair back by relocating healthy follicles.
The two often work together. A doctor may use PRP or medicines to keep native hair strong around a transplanted area, because pattern hair loss continues over time and transplanted hair does not protect the hair around it.
Should I try medicines before PRP or a transplant?
Medicines are usually the foundation of treatment for pattern hair loss. StatPearls lists topical minoxidil, available up to 5 percent, and oral finasteride 1 mg daily for men as the approved medical treatments. Both need at least 4 to 6 months of consistent use before improvement shows and both must be continued to maintain results. Using them together often gives better outcomes than either alone.
Finasteride is more effective at the crown than at the front, can cause side effects such as sexual dysfunction in some men, and is not for women of childbearing age. It must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor.
How do PRP and hair transplant costs compare?
PRP is priced per session and repeated, while a transplant is priced by the number of grafts. Because every plan differs, prices at Abdullah Clinics are confirmed after assessment.
To compare fairly, ask each clinic for a written plan and compare the total over 12 months. A PRP course plus maintenance can add up over a year, while a transplant is a larger one time cost with follow up. The questions below make quotes comparable.
For PRP, ask about
Number of sessions, spacing, what happens after the course, whether medicines are included and when results are reviewed.
For a transplant, ask about
Estimated number of grafts, technique, who performs each step, hairline design, aftercare and follow up visits.
Questions to ask before choosing
Who examines my scalp and donor area?
A doctor should assess your pattern of loss, hair thickness and donor density before recommending anything.
What is my diagnosis?
Pattern hair loss, temporary shedding and patchy loss need different treatment. Confirm the cause first.
What results are realistic?
Ask for a timeline and what improvement to expect, with the limits explained honestly.
What does the plan include?
Get sessions or grafts, aftercare, follow up visits and review dates in writing.
What happens if loss continues?
Pattern loss progresses, so ask how the plan protects your remaining hair over the next few years.

PRP vs hair transplant: frequently asked questions
Is PRP better than a hair transplant?
Neither is better for everyone because they do different jobs. PRP supports hair follicles that are still alive, so it suits early thinning. A hair transplant moves healthy donor follicles into areas that have lost hair, so it suits established loss when enough donor hair remains. A doctor decides after examining your scalp.
Can PRP replace a hair transplant?
No. PRP works on follicles that are still present and weakened. Where follicles have been lost, injections cannot restore hair, and grafting is the option that adds hair back. Many people use medicines or PRP to protect existing hair alongside a transplant.
How many PRP sessions are needed for hair?
The number is set by your doctor and depends on your stage of hair loss and the protocol used. PRP is normally given as a series of sessions rather than a single visit, and most trials judged results at 3 to 6 months. Ask for the planned number of sessions and the review date in writing.
Is PRP for hair permanent?
PRP does not permanently stop pattern hair loss. Pattern hair loss is a continuing process, and StatPearls notes that medical treatments generally need to be continued to keep their benefit. Maintenance sessions may be advised, and long term evidence for PRP is still limited.
Does PRP for hair really work?
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials found PRP increased hair density by an average of about 28 hairs per square centimetre compared with placebo. The authors also reported low certainty evidence, highly varied studies and signs of publication bias, and called for better trials. PRP is a reasonable supportive option and carries no guarantee of results.
How long after a hair transplant will I see results?
New hair becomes visible gradually over several months, and most clinics describe full results maturing around 12 months after surgery. Transplanted hairs often shed early before regrowing, so patience is part of the process. Your surgeon will give you a timeline for your case.
Who is not a good candidate for a hair transplant?
People with too little healthy donor hair, rapidly changing hair loss, an untreated scalp condition or unrealistic expectations may not be suitable. StatPearls describes more than 40 follicular units per square centimetre of donor hair as the usual requirement. A doctor checks your donor area before recommending surgery.
Can I have PRP before or after a hair transplant?
Some doctors combine PRP with a transplant to support the surrounding native hair. Whether it suits you depends on your hair loss stage and healing, so discuss timing with your surgeon.
Can women have a hair transplant or PRP?
Yes. Women with thinning hair can be assessed for both PRP and, in selected cases, transplantation. Female pattern thinning is often diffuse, so donor hair and the cause of thinning need a careful check. Some medicines suited to men, such as finasteride, are not appropriate for women of childbearing age.
How much does PRP or a hair transplant cost in Karachi?
PRP is priced per session and repeated as a course. A hair transplant is priced by the number of grafts, the technique and the area treated. Because every plan differs, the price is confirmed after assessment. Ask for a written plan covering sessions or grafts, aftercare and follow up so you can compare 12 month costs.
