Alopecia Treatment in Karachi
Alopecia treatment in Karachi starts with finding out which type of hair loss you have, because patchy loss, pattern thinning, shedding and scarring each need a different plan. At Abdullah Clinics on Tariq Road, our doctors assess your scalp in person before recommending anything.
Alopecia in short
Alopecia is the medical word for hair loss, and it has several causes. Alopecia areata causes round patches when the immune system targets follicles. Androgenetic alopecia is gradual pattern thinning. Telogen effluvium is temporary shedding after a shock to the body. Scarring alopecias damage the follicle, so early assessment matters. A doctor tells them apart through history, scalp examination, dermoscopy and sometimes blood tests.
What is alopecia?
Alopecia means hair loss. Each hair cycles through growing, transition and resting phases before it sheds and regrows. Alopecia develops when something disturbs that cycle, shrinks the follicle or damages it.
In some people the immune system attacks the follicles. In others, hormone sensitivity gradually shrinks them, or a physical shock such as illness, childbirth or surgery pushes many hairs into the resting phase at once. In a smaller group, inflammation destroys the follicle itself. Because the causes differ, a diagnosis comes before any treatment.

Types of alopecia and what each one looks like
Knowing the type decides which treatment families make sense and which do not.
Alopecia areata and patchy hair loss
Smooth round or oval patches on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. It is autoimmune and cannot be passed on to others.
Androgenetic alopecia
Male or female pattern hair loss. Hairs grow finer over time, with a receding hairline or crown thinning.
Female hair loss in Karachi
Women can have pattern thinning, shedding after childbirth or illness, and thyroid or iron related loss.
Telogen effluvium and sudden hair loss
Heavy shedding that starts about 2 to 4 months after a trigger such as fever, surgery or childbirth.
Scarring alopecia
Inflammation damages the follicle. The scalp may itch, burn or look smooth and shiny. Lost hair usually does not return.
Eyebrow and beard hair loss
Alopecia areata can also affect eyebrows, eyelashes and the beard.
Hair loss doctor in Karachi: how alopecia is diagnosed
A reliable diagnosis uses several pieces of information. Clear photos sent on WhatsApp can help us plan your visit.
Your story
When the loss began, recent illness, childbirth, surgery or stress, medicines and family history.
Scalp examination
The doctor checks the pattern of loss, scalp skin, hair shafts and nails, and may gently pull a few hairs to judge shedding.
Dermoscopy
A magnified view of follicle openings and hair thickness helps separate the types.
Blood tests when needed
Thyroid, iron and vitamin levels are checked when your history points to a medical cause.
Biopsy in selected cases
If the diagnosis is uncertain, a small scalp sample may be taken under local anaesthetic.
A clear plan
You leave knowing your type, your options and when you will be reviewed.
Alopecia treatment in Karachi: the main options
Your doctor chooses from these groups after the diagnosis. Doses and drug choices are set for you personally, so none are listed here.
Topical treatments
Lotions, foams or creams for the scalp or brows. They need weeks to months of regular use.
Injections into the scalp
For small patches of alopecia areata, steroid injections placed in the patch are among the most effective options. A doctor gives them, with care near the eyes.
Oral medicines
Selected people may be prescribed tablets, such as hormone acting medicines in pattern loss or JAK inhibitors for severe alopecia areata. These need screening and review.
Light based therapy
Low level light devices are a supportive option for pattern thinning. Evidence is encouraging but limited, and they are used alongside medical treatment.
PRP and exosome based care
Read about PRP for hair and exosomes for hair loss, including where evidence is limited.
Hair transplant for stable pattern loss
A hair transplant moves your own healthy hair to thinner areas once the pattern has stabilised. Medical treatment usually continues.
Wigs, hair fibres and scalp camouflage can sit alongside medical treatment.
When to see a doctor early
Seek an early assessment if you notice
- A burning, painful or itchy scalp with redness, scaling or pimples
- Smooth shiny patches where follicle openings seem to have gone
- Patches that keep spreading or new patches appearing
- Heavy shedding for more than a few weeks with no clear trigger
Contact a doctor promptly if
- You have scalp pain, pus, spreading redness or fever
- The loss is sudden and affects most of the scalp
Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Speak to the prescribing doctor first.
Hair loss and how it feels
Losing hair can affect confidence, relationships and the way you see yourself. These feelings are common and valid. The British Association of Dermatologists notes higher rates of depression and anxiety in people with alopecia areata and encourages people to mention the emotional side to a healthcare professional.
At Abdullah Clinics, the doctors listen first and talk about realistic goals. Peer support, talking therapies, camouflage and wigs can all help. If low mood or panic is affecting you, please speak to a doctor or mental health professional as well.
Alopecia treatment results timeline
- Visit 1
History, scalp examination, dermoscopy and any blood tests.
- Weeks 2 to 6
Early treatment begins. Visible regrowth is unusual this early.
- Months 3 to 6
Hair grows slowly, so new fine hairs or better density usually show around now.
- Months 6 to 12
A fairer picture of response. Shedding after a trigger typically tapers over 6 to 9 months.
- Ongoing
Alopecia areata can relapse and pattern loss can progress again if treatment stops.
Individual results vary and no treatment can promise a specific outcome. Regrown hair in alopecia areata can start fine or white before darkening.
What does the evidence say about alopecia treatment?
The British Association of Dermatologists patient information on alopecia areata (April 2024) explains that many people with limited patches regrow without treatment, that steroid injections are among the most effective options for small patches, and that long courses of steroid tablets are not recommended. It states that oral JAK inhibitors are licensed for severe cases and carry safety warnings.
A 2024 AJMC review reports that baricitinib was approved by the US FDA and the European Medicines Agency in 2022 for adults with moderate to severe alopecia areata, and that ritlecitinib received US FDA approval in 2023.
A 2023 review in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology describes minoxidil and finasteride as the long established medical treatments for pattern hair loss, and notes that low level light and PRP show promising but preliminary results. A hair transplant does not stop pattern loss progressing. DermNet describes telogen effluvium as self correcting once the trigger is removed.
What this means for you: evidence is stronger for established medical treatments and weaker for newer options such as PRP and exosomes. Your doctor will explain what is known, what is uncertain and what is realistic for you.
Alopecia treatment side effects and who should wait
Common effects you may notice
- Dryness, redness or mild irritation where topical products are used
- More shedding early in some treatments before density improves
- Skin thinning where steroid injections are repeated, which is why doctors limit frequency
Tablets and procedures have their own risks, which your doctor explains for the option you consider.
Tell us first, or treatment may wait
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy
- You have an active scalp infection or open sores
- You have a history of serious infection, blood clots or cancer, which needs review before some oral medicines
- You have active alopecia areata or scarring alopecia and are considering a transplant
Alopecia care compared with related hair options
This table shows where an alopecia assessment sits among our hair services.
| Option | Best suited to | How it works | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alopecia assessment and medical plan | Any new or unexplained hair loss | Diagnosis first, then treatment chosen by the doctor | Forms the base of every plan |
| PRP for hair | Selected pattern thinning | Concentrate from your own blood placed in the scalp | Promising, but methods vary |
| Exosomes for hair | People exploring newer options | Cell derived particles applied to the scalp | Evidence is limited |
| Hair transplant | Stable pattern loss with enough donor hair | Healthy hair moved to thinner areas | Medical treatment usually continues |

Alopecia treatment in Karachi: frequently asked questions
What is alopecia?
Alopecia is the medical word for hair loss. It includes alopecia areata (patchy loss), androgenetic alopecia (pattern thinning), telogen effluvium (shedding after a trigger) and scarring alopecias. Each type behaves differently, so the first step is finding out which you have.
What does alopecia treatment in Karachi involve at Abdullah Clinics?
It starts with a face to face consultation where the doctor asks about your hair history, examines your scalp and decides whether tests are needed. Treatment is then matched to the type of hair loss, with benefits and limits explained first.
Ganjapan aur gol gol baal girne ka ilaj Karachi mein kaise hota hai? (How is baldness and patchy hair loss treated in Karachi?)
Treatment depends on the cause, so a doctor first identifies whether the loss is patchy, pattern thinning, shedding or scarring. Patchy loss may use steroid based options, while pattern baldness may need medicines, PRP or a transplant. Book a consultation for a personal plan.
Does alopecia areata treatment work, and can hair grow back?
Yes, hair often regrows, but the course varies. The British Association of Dermatologists notes that many people with limited patches regrow within a year even without treatment, while full recovery is less common when over half the hair is lost. New patches can appear later.
Can androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) be stopped?
Treatment can slow its progress and, in some people, improve density, but the tendency continues, so plans are usually long term. Medicines, PRP and light based options are used, and a hair transplant can restore stable areas. Your doctor explains what is realistic for your pattern.
What female hair loss treatment is available in Karachi?
The right plan depends on the cause, such as pattern thinning, shedding after childbirth, thyroid or iron problems, or alopecia areata. A doctor examines your scalp and may order blood tests. Some medicines are unsuitable in pregnancy, so mention any plans for a baby.
Will my hair grow back after sudden hair loss (telogen effluvium)?
In most people it does. Telogen effluvium usually begins 2 to 4 months after a trigger such as illness, childbirth, surgery or major stress, and shedding generally settles over several months once the trigger is addressed. Chronic forms can last longer, so see a doctor.
Can hair regrow in scarring alopecia?
Hair lost to scarring alopecia usually does not regrow because the follicle has been damaged. That is why early assessment matters: treatment aims to calm inflammation and slow further loss. Warning signs include a burning, itchy or sore scalp, redness, scaling and smooth shiny patches.
Are JAK inhibitor tablets used for alopecia areata?
They are used for severe alopecia areata in some countries. Regulators including the US FDA have approved certain oral JAK inhibitors for moderate to severe disease, and they carry safety warnings, including infection risk. Suitability and availability are your doctor’s decision.
How much does alopecia treatment cost in Karachi?
The cost depends on the type of hair loss, the tests needed, the treatment chosen and the visits your plan requires. At Abdullah Clinics you receive a written price after the doctor has assessed you. Message us on WhatsApp on 0333 358 8706 to arrange a consultation.
Which hair loss doctor in Karachi should I see for alopecia?
A dermatologist is the usual choice, because alopecia needs a diagnosis before treatment. At Abdullah Clinics, Dr. Bushra Paracha and Dr. Sabahat are consultant dermatologists. We are off Tariq Road, open Monday to Saturday, 12 PM to 8 PM. Please confirm before visiting.
Can PRP or a hair transplant help with alopecia?
They can help in selected cases. PRP is used for some types of thinning, and a hair transplant may suit stable pattern loss with enough donor hair. Neither suits active alopecia areata or active scarring alopecia. See our guide to PRP versus hair transplant.
