Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline: Day by Day and Month by Month (Karachi Guide 2026)
Knowing what is normal makes recovery calmer. This guide follows the healing skin and the hair cycle from day one to month 12, with aftercare tips for Karachi’s climate and the signs that need a call to your surgeon. It supports our hair transplant in Karachi page.

What is the hair transplant recovery timeline?
Recovery has two layers. The skin heals in days to weeks, and the hair cycle takes months. Healing is the part you see first. The hair result is slower, and many patients feel worried around the third month when the hair looks thinner. That stage is expected.

What happens day by day and month by month after a hair transplant?
- Day 0 to 3
The scalp is tender and may be swollen. You follow your surgeon’s washing and sleeping instructions and avoid touching grafts.
- Days 4 to 14
Small scabs form around grafts and usually fall away within about one to two weeks. Redness fades gradually. Your surgeon tells you when to start gentle washing.
- Weeks 2 to 8
The American Academy of Dermatology says transplanted hair falls out in this window. Mayo Clinic notes that it looks unchanged for about a month, then sheds.
- Month 3
Hair may look thinner than before surgery. This is a normal pause while follicles restart.
- Months 3 to 5
Mayo Clinic describes regrowth beginning in this window. Early hairs are fine and short.
- Months 6 to 9
The American Academy of Dermatology says most patients see results in this period.
- Months 8 to 12 and beyond
Density and thickness improve. Mayo Clinic describes the best results at about 8 to 12 months, and some patients need up to 12 months or longer.
What aftercare helps grafts heal well?
A 2026 review of complications in FUE hair transplantation found infection below 1 percent in most studies and folliculitis in about 12 percent in one large multicentre study, and listed asepsis, careful technique and cleansing within 48 to 72 hours among the preventive steps. In practice, aftercare means three things.
- Wash exactly as instructed and avoid scratching or picking scabs.
- Take medicines as prescribed and keep review appointments.
- Protect the scalp from sun, dust and sweat. Karachi’s heat means a clean, loose hat and a plan for exercise dates.
Ask your clinic for these instructions in writing and for a number to call if something looks wrong.
Which changes need a call to your surgeon?
Common and normal: redness, scabs, itching, mild swelling and shedding of transplanted hair. Worth a check: worsening pain, spreading redness, pus or fever, and bumps that become painful, which may indicate folliculitis or infection. Numbness in the donor or recipient area can occur and usually settles, but report it.

How do you protect your result after the transplant?
Transplanted hair is taken from a donor area that is resistant to thinning, so it is intended to last. Hair around it may still thin. The American Academy of Dermatology says a dermatologist may recommend hair loss medicine to prevent or slow new loss. Our non surgical hair loss treatment page explains the options, and the hair specialist page explains what a first consultation involves.
